Hackers gain access to Chamber of Commerce networksTuesday, December 27, 2011
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce was successfully breached by Chinese hackers, who used the network access to steal the information of approximately 3 million members and six weeks' worth or emails from select employees, the Wall Street Journal reported. The hackers were noticed in May 2010, though details of the breach are just now becoming available. The cybercriminals had access to a network controlling approximately 300 websites, and used this to steal data from specifically-targeted employees, according to the news source. The focus of the breach was on Chamber of Commerce members who are involved in policy with China. Hackers stole approximately six weeks worth of emails from the accounts of these individuals, the report said. The Wall Street Journal explained that experts analyzing the network breach found the hackers gained access to the Chamber of Commerce for approximately one year before their activities were identified. Tracking down hackers once they have broken through the firewall is among the greatest challenges many organizations face. |
