Agency rated A+ for Security by FISMA

Mountain View, CA - April 17, 2006
- AirTight® Networks, the leading provider of wireless perimeter security solutions, today announced that the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has installed AirTight’s SpectraGuard® Enterprise wireless intrusion prevention system (WIPS). This system will help the USAID secure its information and enforce its wireless policy – both in the US and in many countries around the world.

USAID is the principal U.S. government agency to extend assistance to countries recovering from disaster, trying to escape poverty, and engaging in democratic reforms. USAID supports a country’s long-term and equitable economic growth and advances U.S. foreign policy objectives by supporting: economic growth, agriculture and trade; global health; and democracy, conflict prevention and humanitarian assistance.

USAID is the only federal government agency to receive two consecutive A+ ratings for security under the guidelines established through FISMA (the Federal Information Security Management Act) passed by Congress in 2002. In fact, this year they were awarded a perfect score.

To sustain this A+ security rating, USAID determined they needed to deploy a wireless intrusion prevention system (WIPS). USAID conducted a two month evaluation process, and selected AirTight Networks as the best WIPS solution on the market.

AirTight Networks’ SpectraGuard Enterprise has established its industry leadership position by delivering the key elements of an effective wireless intrusion prevention system (WIPS):

  •  detecting and correctly classifying wireless threats – to catch all threats, while minimizing false alarms
  •  preventing (multiple, simultaneous) wireless threats – while continuing to scan for new ones
  •  accurately locating the wireless threats on a floor map – so they can be removed.

And, SpectraGuard is able to provide these capabilities whether or not an enterprise has deployed a wireless LAN (WLAN) infrastructure – so it can protect USAID now with its current “No Wireless” policy and also help them migrate their network in a secure fashion should they decide to deploy wireless in the future.

“AirTight is a perfect fit for our risk-based program,” said Phil Heneghan, Chief Information Security Officer, USAID. “AirTight’s innovative technology will help the agency mitigate wireless risks to our network that might be introduced accidentally or maliciously.”

“AirTight is delighted to be assisting USAID in its security infrastructure,” said Dennis Tsu, vice president of marketing at AirTight Networks. “USAID has established themselves as a Center of Excellence (COE) for the US government in security, and AirTight is proud to be part of that.”

AirTight Networks’ family of products include SpectraGuard® Enterprise, SpectraGuard Sentry, SpectraGuard Planner, and SpectraGuard SAFE (Security Agent For Endpoints) products. As shown in the recently released Tolly Group report and the March 2006 Information Security Magazine review, AirTight’s SpectraGuard Enterprise outperforms its competitors in wireless intrusion prevention functionality.
