System secures wireless infrastructure for NYC buses and subways

Mountain View, CA - June 13, 2006
- AirTight® Networks, the leading provider of wireless intrusion prevention solutions, today announced that MTA New York City Transit (NYC Transit) has installed AirTight’s SpectraGuard® Enterprise wireless intrusion prevention system (WIPS). This system will help NYC Transit enforce its wireless security policies around the clock – in the city that never sleeps.

NYC Transit is the agency within the New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority responsible for operating the city’s extensive bus and subway network. NYC Transit manages a number of locations which have a variety of wireless security policies. SpectraGuard Enterprise is currently installed at a small number of facilities, and will be rolled out over time to cover additional sites as appropriate.

AirTight Networks' SpectraGuard Enterprise has established its industry leadership position by delivering the key elements of an effective wireless intrusion prevention system (WIPS):

  • detecting and correctly classifying wireless threats – to catch all threats, while minimizing false alarms
  • preventing (multiple, simultaneous) wireless threats – while continuing to scan for new ones
  • accurately locating the wireless threats on a floor map – so they can be removed.

And, SpectraGuard is able to provide these capabilities whether or not an enterprise has deployed a wireless LAN (WLAN) infrastructure – so it has the breadth to help NYC Transit across all of its various wireless security scenarios.

"As the transit operator for New York City, NYC Transit is obviously very concerned about security, and at the same time, they want to take advantage of wireless technologies and its mobility benefits,” said Dennis Tsu, vice president of marketing at AirTight Networks. “A WIPS solution is the key enabler for matching these two objectives. As a public agency, NYC Transit had to go through an evaluation of all the available WIPS vendors and a public procurement process, so AirTight was delighted to win their business. AirTight is proud to be assisting New York City Transit in securing its network and wireless infrastructure."

AirTight Networks’ family of products include SpectraGuard® Enterprise, SpectraGuard MNC, SpectraGuard Sentry, SpectraGuard Planner, and SpectraGuard SAFE (Security Agent For Endpoints) products. As shown in the recently released Tolly Group report and the March 2006 Information Security Magazine review, AirTight’s SpectraGuard Enterprise outperforms its competitors in wireless intrusion prevention functionality.
