SpectraGuard Products Help Organizations Optimize Both Wireless Performance and Security with an ‘Always On’ WIPS

Mountain View, CA — July 22, 2008 – AirTight® Networks, the leading provider of wireless intrusion prevention systems (WIPS) and wireless vulnerability management, today announced the introduction of its SpectraGuard® 802.11n Solution that consists of -

  • 802.11n MIMO Sensor platform
  • SpectraGuard Planner 5.0 release that includes support for 802.11n infrastructure & WIPS deployment planning
  • 802.11n WLAN Coverage Estimator (free utility) provided on AirTight’s website

SpectraGuard is now the industry’s first and only proactive (‘always on’) wireless intrusion prevention system to provide comprehensive security from all 802.11n threats with backward compatibility with existing a/b/g wireless networks. The new sensors are available for both AirTight’s onsite product, SpectraGuard Enterprise and its recently introduced SaaS offering, SpectraGuard Online. AirTight’s 802.11n sensor offers full compliance with IEEE 802.3af PoE standard; customers can leverage their existing switching and PoE infrastructure to deploy AirTight’s 802.11n sensors. Customers can also benefit by reducing the required sensor density up to 30% using AirTight’s 802.11n sensors because of a 200% in increase in coverage range (a benefit of MIMO technology).

Significant enhancements to AirTight’s SpectraGuard platform of note are:

  • “Live event” Architecture to reduce repetitive and superfluous events, prioritize threat response and provide threat exposure analysis
  • Stand alone sensor operation to enforce policy even if connectivity to the SpectraGuard Enterprise appliance is interrupted

New Sensor and Planning Software Addresses Three Key Business Problems for 802.11n Deployments: Planning, Optimization and Protection.

Wide adoption of 802.11n technology presents several challenges – including increased level of interference from neighbor networks as a result of increased RF range of 802.11n Access Points. Customers are likely to experience degraded 802.11n network performance because of this. AirTight’s SpectraGuard platform can be used to monitor and troubleshoot interference and other performance issues to help customers maximize ROI on their 802.11n investment.

“AirTight already provides us with wireless security and network performance tuning we could not achieve otherwise,” said Troy Wood, senior network administrator, John C. Lincoln Health Center. “The emergence of 802.11n introduces new challenges in both those areas and we know AirTight will help us meet them.”

AirTight also announced SpectraGuard Planner 5.0, an enhanced version of its planning software to optimize planning for 802.11n infrastructure and WIPS deployment for existing or new deployments. AirTight’s SpectraGuard Planner provides easy to use wizard-driven pre-deployment RF planning capabilities for customers struggling with planning a new 802.11n deployment or 802.11a/b/g to 802.11n migration. AirTight is also providing an 802.11n WLAN Coverage Estimator on its Web site; this is a free interactive utility to help organizations which are trying to get a better understanding of how 802.11n impacts their environment and to estimate coverage, security and bill-of-materials as well as the cost of 802.11n rollouts.

“802.11n offers many benefits to the enterprise with faster data rates, improved throughput and improved coverage range,” said Sri Sundaralingam, VP of product management for AirTight. “Those benefits, however, amplify existing wireless security threats ranging from rogue access points to denial of service (DOS) attacks. Accurate threat detection and classification becomes more critical than ever before to avoid chasing false positives given more devices will be visible in the air because of increased RF range of 802.11n technology.”

“AirTight is the only WIPS vendor to receive a second consecutive “Positive” rating by Gartner in its recent MarketScope and as this major technology transition is introduced to the enterprise, AirTight is happy to provide tools to our customers as they deal with the emerging security challenges,” continued Sundaralingam.

Using AirTight’s SpectraGuard 802.11n solution, organizations can:

  • achieve comprehensive security through accurate classification, robust prevention, and accurate location tracking of 802.11n threats
  • reduce total cost of ownership for WIPS deployment through reduced sensor density
  • simplify deployment and maximize ROI with planning and design tools

Pricing and Availability

AirTight’s 802.11n sensor platform will be available in mid-September 2008 and is competitively priced at $1295.00 per sensor. A starter kit is available for $9,995 that includes a SpectraGuard Enterprise appliance, two 802.11n sensors, and site planning for wireless security up to 50,000 sq ft.
