Enforcing Wireless Policies Critical to Keeping Sensitive Data Protected
Mountain View, CA - December 1, 2008 - AirTight® Networks, the leading provider of wireless intrusion prevention products and services, today announced the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) will use AirTight SpectraGuard® Enterprise to monitor and protect its WLAN airspace.
NCMEC serves as a clearinghouse on the issues of missing and exploited children and its mission is to help find missing children, prevent child abduction, and prevent child sexual exploitation. It works with victims, their families, and the law enforcement professionals who serve them. The introduction of sophisticated communications technologies into the market has played a significant role in the work NCMEC does.
"We provide a lot of training to law enforcement who are always coming in and out of our building. They need access to the Internet through a wireless connection so a 'no Wi-Fi' policy was not an option," said Steven Gelfound, Director of Information Technology for NCMEC . The data we collect is very sensitive and must be kept completely secure. Because we work so closely with law enforcement agencies, if our data was compromised it could also compromise criminal cases. Trust is critical to our ability to work with law enforcement."
Because the Center is headquartered in the Washington, D.C. area, there are Wi-Fi signals all around it. Distinguishing between what is on its network and which are just neighboring signals was an important component to understand its security posture, detect problems and implement active prevention before any data was compromised by a breach.
Since users of the NCMEC database include Federal law enforcement agencies located throughout the country, they could not install any software on the machines of those individuals so the Center looked for a wireless intrusion prevention solution which could protect its network(s) without placing an agent on the clients. To identify the right solution, NCMEC turned to Rsignia, a provider of IT security, network/infrastructure and power solutions to Federal agencies and commercial customers. Rsignia provided the WIPS solution at its cost with one day of engineering services at no charge.
"We looked at all the WIDS/WIPS solutions on the market, did extensive research and testing, and found AirTight's SpectraGuard to be head and shoulders above any other solution," said Mike Wannemacher, Vice President of Operations and Contracts at Rsignia. "We were impressed with its ease of use, thoroughness of detection and prevention as well as the location tracking features. The issue of child safety and protection is near and dear to all of us here at Rsignia. We look forward to doing more for this worthwhile cause."
SpectraGuard's accuracy and robustness provides relief from false positives, thus, offering customers automated detection, prevention and location tracking which, unlike legacy wireless IDS products, eliminates much of the burden of administrative tasks.
"We wanted to consolidate both internal and external wireless networks because it would be easier to manage but we had to be sure that neither our employees nor visitors were connecting to unauthorized access points and jeopardizing our security," continued Gelfound. "We had to have a way to know absolutely that our wireless network was separate and protected proactively."
AirTight is the only WIPS vendor to receive a second consecutive "Positive" rating by Gartner in its recent MarketScope and its products have consistently outperformed its competitors in other head-to-head, in-depth evaluations (including Tolly and Information Security). Frost and Sullivan awarded AirTight its 2008 North America Network Endpoint Protection Customer Value Enhancement Award and the 2008 Market Share Advancement Award for demonstrating excellence in increasing market share within its industry. Recent magazine reviews have awarded five stars to SpectraGuard Enterprise and praised it as "a wireless security solution that's easy to deploy, elegantly simple and frighteningly effective," and "a unique wireless security solution that can automatically classify and control access points (APs) and wireless clients."
