AirTight Receives U.S. Patent for Automated Wi-Fi Client Classification: Unburdens IT from Manual InventoryAirTight Now Holds 13 U.S., and Two International Granted Patents for Wireless Intrusion Prevention with Two More Allowed and 20+ Pending Mountain View, CA - May 18, 2010 - AirTight® Networks, the global leader in wireless security and compliance solutions, today announced it has been granted US patent number 7,710,933 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for automated Wi-Fi client classification techniques. AirTight's automated Wi-Fi client classification, available in its SpectraGuard® Wireless Intrusion Prevention System (WIPS), simplifies wireless security policy enforcement for the network administrator by eliminating the manual effort involved in keeping an up-to-date inventory of wireless devices and chasing a huge volume of alarms. By way of behavioral analysis, the AirTight system automatically classifies wireless devices into appropriate user categories to ensure that authorized users do not wander to neighboring wireless networks (WLAN) and unauthorized users do not access the enterprise wireless network. According to a Forrester research report referenced in a recent article by Matt Carrier, mobility consultant at Sybase in EnterpriseMobileToday, almost half of U.S. and European businesses surveyed are embracing the notion of allowing personally-owned devices access to a secure corporate network. One-quarter of businesses surveyed do provide full support to at least some personal devices, and another 21 percent provide at least limited support. Carrier commented, "If you don't think any mobile devices are on your network, consider this example. A large national retailer conducted a Sybase Exchange server implementation with gating software at its corporate headquarters. Within just a few days, its IT department determined that the company had more than 1,000 unauthorized mobile devices on the corporate network." "The proliferation of devices equipped with Wi-Fi and the number of personal devices coming into the enterprise make it a daunting task for any network administrator to manually inventory all the devices in the environment, to accurately classify them in order to enforce appropriate security policies" said Dr. Hemant Chaskar, Director of Technology at AirTight. "AirTight's SpectraGuard has built in intelligence to understand which users are authorized, which are unauthorized and which are friendly neighbors, no matter what wireless devices they are using, and to automatically enforce appropriate wireless security policies on them."
