Monitoring Wireless and Wired Sides of Network Concurrently Is Critical for Comprehensive Defense Against Wi-Fi Threats and Vulnerabilities
Mountain View, CA - September 28, 2010 - AirTightŪ Networks, the global leader in wireless security and compliance solutions, today announced it has been granted U.S. patent number 7,804,808 by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for its proprietary technology which enforces Wi-Fi security policy on the wired network segments of enterprise networks. The technology, trademarked by AirTight as VLAN Policy MappingTM, enables network and security administrators to define and enforce how they want their authorized Wi-Fi traffic to map on the wired network segments.
Such policy enforcement prevents Wi-Fi security vulnerabilities caused by mis-typing, improper configuration and zero day exploits in the Wi-Fi access points and controllers. AirTight now holds 16 U.S. and two international patents for Wireless Intrusion Prevention (WIPS) and has more than 20 patents pending.
"Monitoring wireless and wired sides of the network concurrently is critical for a comprehensive defense against Wi-Fi threats and vulnerabilities, and this principle needs to be applied to authorized Wi-Fi traffic as well," said Dr. Hemant Chaskar, Director of Technology at AirTight. "The two-sided policy enforcement for authorized Wi-Fi traffic provides stronger protection against malicious exploits and inadvertent mis-configurations."
The power of VLAN Policy Mapping was evident when the Cisco Skyjacking zero day exploit was discovered. This exploit could change how authorized AP traffic mapped onto wired segments and could turn an authorized Cisco AP into a rogue AP.
"VLAN Policy Mapping already protected our customers' networks from this previously unknown attack, as it could quickly detect wire side mis-configuration and quarantine the Cisco AP under attack," added Chaskar.
